Goldenberry Farms invests to expand it’s Sugar Mango™ brand
GBF commits to further investments into the Sweet Sugar Mango® program using a combination of technology and Sustainable Agriculture, designed to enhance product shelf life for consumers
Santa Marta, CO - Goldenberry Farms has begun the phased expansion of its popular Sugar Mango™ miniature mango and Sweet Sugar Mangos®. Improvements include expanding the network of certified growers, as well as investments in sustainability, social certifications, and shelf life enhancements.
“Our goal is to take this delicious ‘mini mango’ and naturally improve the fruit. The fruit has superfans across the globe, and this will be the first year which the protocol is open to import to the United States, so it’s important for us to ensure the mango arrives to the end consumer in perfect shape, and with the same sweet juicy flavor that we enjoy here in the orchards.”
The origin of the miniature mango is believed to be Spain, where the trees thrived in the summer sun. Sailors brought the mango tree and many different varieties to the Americas in the 1600’s, and other exotic ports. Today, the miniature mango exists in 16+ different countries across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Our Sugar Mango™ miniature mangos are grown in Spain, Brazil, Colombia, and New Zealand. They are marked with the country of origin, and will usually come to you from the nearest possible origin.
Sweet Sugar Mangos™ have an edible skin, so appearance is quite important to the end consumer.
“This variety is really special, it is smaller and more sweet and fragrant than the Ataulfo and Honey mango, and much more convenient to eat. It’s very popular with parents and children who really love the fact that they can be eaten without peeling.“
Sweet Sugar Mangos are offered commercially in 2 kilo (4.5 pound) cases, which hold between 18-24 mangos each. Specially branded retail kits and mini boxes are available to merchandise the Sugar Mangos™ in store.
The agronomy team at Goldenberry Farms has teamed with university researchers as well as mango experts across the region to help conduct shelf life trials and natural treatments which can help extend the flavor and overall shelf life of the mango.
Goldenberry Farms is committed to sustainable farming, and enhancing the environment in all areas in which the company does business, keeping with its “Where good things grow” soil health and carbon initiatives.
There are many ways to create fresher produce with more vitamins and minerals retained without resorting to dangerous chemicals or factory-farm processes. By working with Mother Nature, and the soil and plant technology, our team is able to develop fresh produce to the end consumer faster, fresher, and at a fair price.
“Our goal is to offer at least 12 days of shelf life to these mini mangos, which is an increase of about 40%. Working with the growers to determine the ideal harvest time, as well as small factors such as the time of the day and weather conditions all affect the outcome of shelf life. There are also several post harvest treatments which may help to ensure a food safe and pest-resistant product for the end consumer.
Sugar Mango™ miniature mangos travel by air to destinations across the globe. The fruit is harvested, and then travels overnight to be cleaned, sorted, and packed. From there it boards a flight bound for its final destination.
Although Sugar Mango™ minature mango and season is only 6 months, February - late August, the company works all year long to enhance the orchards, soil, and harvest technology involved with maintaining the quality of the Sugar Mango™ miniature mango brand.
